For the past year, the wife and I have researched Tattler reusable canning lids. Online we found the lids can be $0.70+ each. We were lucky to find them for $5.00 a box ($0.42 each) at a local grocery store this past summer.
At first we thought they would be just like the Mason snap lids. As they are just lids, how hard can they be? Boy were we wrong.
Out of all that we have canned using Tattler lids, 50% failed to seal. We have tried a few times yet still resulting in a 50% failure rate. We were about to donate them away and go back to using the BPA coated Mason snap lids. But we figured lets give it one more go around on the research before we give up.
And I am glad we did, as we found that some of the rules dealing with the lids had changed. Adapting these changes to our previous methods, and following them to the very letter. What we have canned with the new rules we are happy to say we are having a 0% failure rate.
Here are some rules to follow with precision when using the Tattler lids.
The 7 Rules of Tattler Lids
- Inspect the tops of your jars for cracks and/or nicks. Wash, rinse and sterilize the jars. Scald (close to boiling) the lids and rubber rings. Leave the lids and rings in the water until you are ready to use them.
- Fill the jars with food as indicated per the canning instructions for the food you are processing. Wipe the top ring of each jar after filling. Place a lid and rubber ring combination on each jar. Ensure you do not have 2 rubber rings stuck together.
- Center the Tattler lid on the jar and hold in place with index finger while tightening the metal screw band finger-tip tight. Do not over tighten, this cannot be stressed enough. It will be loose compared to using a metal ring on a Mason snap lid. Product must be allowed to vent during processing.
- Process the jars as per the instructions for the food(s) you are processing. Do not forget to add a dash of vinegar to your canning water to keep the hazing off the outside of the jars.
- When the processing time is complete, remove each jar and tighten the metal band firmly immediately upon removal from the canner/water bath.
- When jars have cooled, remove the metal bands and lift gently on the Tattler lid to determine if any failures have occurred. Sealed jars may be stored with or without the metal bands as desired.
- Date the jar to know when it was processed for food inventory purposes.
Miscellaneous Rules of Tattler Lids
- When removing a Tattler lid, gently insert the dull side of table knife (or similar object) between the rubber and lid or jar to release the seal. Do not use a sharp knife. Or the rounded end of a typical can opener can also do the trick.
- We prefer to hand wash the plastic lids and rubber ring and allow to air dry. Once dry store for future use. Do not save any rubber ring which are cut, nicked or deformed.
- To date or mark a Tattler lid, a Sharpie can be used but will leave a ghost print on the lid after cleaning. Round stickers (1.5″ or 2″) also work, a few will tend to peal up due to the raised Tattler printing on the lid.
- Extra rubber rings can be purchased.
Tattler lids are good for many reasons. First, no BPA on the lid unlike the Mason snap lids. The Tattlers are reusable time and time again, where the Mason snap lids are suppose to be single use then discarded. The Tattlers are easier to remove without damaging and no denting. When vacuum sealing a jar, the Tattlers out perform the Mason snap lids hands down. The only draw back of the Tattlers, no ping sound.
So far we have about 1/8th of our food stock sitting in Tattler lids. Over the next two seasons we hope to have 100% sitting in Tattler lids. And those Mason snap lids can go the way of the video arcades… history.
